Daishinbo Three Peaks Dewa Sanzan Experience
Written by Info Dewa Sanzan
Since ancient times, traversing the three sacred Dewa Sanzan peaks has been known to give visitors a renewed sense of life often likened to being reborn. Before long, this epic journey came to be known as the Dewa Sanzan Journey of Rebirth. Traditionally, only under the guidance of a yamabushi (mountain ascetic) could you climb all three mountains and complete the journey. The Daishinbo Three Peaks Experience is your chance to complete the Dewa Sanzan Journey of Rebirth under one of the Dewa Sanzan’s most respected yamabushi masters, Master Kazuhiro Hayasaka.
Your experience begins and ends in Master Hayasaka’s family-run 300-year-old Shukubo pilgrim lodge, Daishinbo. Just as countless generations have done for centuries, here you will undertake a purification involving special Shojin Ryori meals and secret rituals before Master Hayasaka leads you into the three sacred Dewa Sanzan peaks: Haguro-san (Mt. Haguro), Gassan (Mt. Gassan), and Yudono-san (Mt. Yudono).
The program’s key phrase is “Uketamou” (“I accept”), which participants are encouraged to say in response to all instructions from the yamabushi guide. By accepting both the challenges and joys of the pilgrimage, you open yourself to new experiences and personal transformation.
